What Makes Cats’ Purr?

It’s funny that cats purr much more than they meow or make any other sounds, yet we know little to nothing about why. It has often been associated with contentment and satisfaction, but cats also purr when frightened, injured, or even near death, suggesting a more complex function than previously thought.

The mechanics are clear; they involve rapid movement of the laryngeal muscles. But the purpose extends beyond communication. Some research indicates purring may have a healing mechanism, as the frequency of purrs (25 to 150 Hertz) promotes tissue regeneration and pain relief. But none of these provide conclusive answers.
