What These Famous Olympic Athletes Are Doing Now
Oksana Baiul – Figure Skating
Figure skater Oksana Baiul’s first love as a child was ballet, but she was not lithe enough to be a ballerina. The next best thing was figure skating, which her mother said was “ballet but with skates,” to convince her to take lessons. Baiul became the 1993 World Champion at only 15. The following year she became the Olympic Champion in the ladies singles category.
The Olympic gold medalist migrated to the United States so she could skate professionally and earn money. She joined two touring troupes, Champions on Ice and Broadway on Ice but had to part ways eventually. Oksana currently lives in Las Vegas with her family.
