Are You Ready to Be a Lawyer? 5 Things to Ask Yourself Before Taking the Plunge
Perhaps you have entertained the thought of appearing in court and defending an innocent man, but the reality of being a lawyer is much more than just this. This job, while it is lucrative, is not really for everybody. Here are some questions you should ask yourself if you think you are ready to get into law school.
Do You Want to Represent People?
Before deciding to take the plunge and get into law school, the most important thing to ask yourself is if you are willing to get into a life wherein you are going to speak on behalf of natural people, corporations or the state. Regardless of how you will be practicing law; whether you plan to get in a big law firm, middle tiered law firm or one in your own name, representing others is an indispensable part of lawyering. It will almost be like you are an alter ego of whoever you are representing in the eyes of the law.
When your client gets sued, you will be your client’s champion. Your client’s life, liberty or property will be in your hands. You will be handling your client’s problems as if they were your own and you should see to it that justice gets served.
Where Do You See Yourself In The Future?

You can do almost anything with a law degree and a lawyer’s license. There are an infinite number of fields that you can get into as a lawyer. However, this does not always mean that you need one. A lot of lawyers do not actually practice law and you might end up wasting your effort and money.
To help yourself decide, talk to people in the fields and jobs that you are interested in getting into. With this given information, you should be able to decide if a law degree would help you in the long run. Just because you see a lot of people getting a law degree does not mean that it is necessary.
Are You Willing to Commit to a Life of Learning?
Lawyers dedicate themselves to a life of learning. Unlike other disciplines wherein constants are studied, laws evolve continuously. Laws constantly get amended or repealed and a lawyer has to be aware of such developments and be experts thereof. Other jurisdictions even adopt common law concepts wherein nothing is written in law, but a right exists and lawyers should know all that. Even while laws are written, their interpretation is subject to a lot of heated debate and that is why a lawyer is always on the lookout for applicable jurisprudence.
The moment you cease to learn, that is when you cease to become a lawyer. You will never stop studying as a lawyer. If you are in for learning something new every day, then this might just be the profession for you.
Are You Willing to Give Up Time and Money?

You can already get a job that pays well right after college. If however, you choose to take your career to the next level and be a lawyer, that would mean that you would be giving up another five to seven years of your life on top of college. Other than that, you will surely spend a lot on thick law books, highlighters and a lot of coffee.
Just like most difficult things, the study of law is very demanding. It has been described as a “jealous mistress” since you can practically screw up if you do not give it enough time and dedication. However, do keep in mind that a lot of people in very difficult situations have risen up to become very successful lawyers.
What Is The Job Market Like?
There is an almost infinite number of options for lawyers to get into once they graduate. A lawyer can get to government service, private practice, corporate practice, join the judiciary and a whole lot more. However, just like everything else, you also have to be aware that lawyers are not immune to the economy. The more lawyers there are, the more unstable the job market will be.
However, statistics show that the demand for lawyers is higher than ever and that law school applications have been down in recent years. This also means that a lot of schools are offering scholarships nowadays.
While it will not come easy, it will be all worth it if this is the right job for you. What do you think of this list? Care to share with us other tips that you might give to aspiring lawyers? Hit us up in the comments below.
