Acting U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon Resigns Amid Directives to Drop Eric Adams Case

On Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, Danielle Sassoon shocked the legal world. After just three weeks as interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), she stepped down. Her reason? She refused to comply with the Justice Department’s order to drop corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

However, Sassoon didn’t slip away quietly. In a fiery resignation letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, she laid out her reasons. She argued there was no legal basis to dismiss the case and accused the Justice Department of political interference.

She claimed that Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, the official behind the order, failed to justify his decision.

The resignation of Hagan Scotten, another high-ranking prosecutor, added fuel to the fire. He wrote that he “entirely agreed” with Sassoon’s stance.

Who Is Danielle Sassoon?

Danielle Sassoon was one of the top legal minds in the country. At 38, she had already built a reputation as a tough and principled prosecutor. She was the highest-ranking federal law enforcement officer overseeing cases in Manhattan, the Bronx, and surrounding counties.

Her credentials were stellar. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and earned her law degree from Yale. She clerked for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the U.S. Court of Appeals and later for the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Since joining SDNY in 2016, she prosecuted high-profile cases, including racketeering and sex trafficking trials. Most notably, she was part of the team that took down FTX founder Samuel Bankman-Fried on fraud charges.

A Look at Sassoon’s Career as a Prosecutor

Sassoon’s career was defined by her relentless pursuit of justice. Before becoming acting U.S. Attorney, she was co-chief of criminal appeals. She won accolades, including the FBI Director’s Award for Outstanding Criminal Investigation in 2024 and the Women in Federal Law Enforcement Top Prosecutor Award in 2023.

CNN / Carrie Cohen, who worked with Sassoon at SDNY, called her “diligent, tough, but fair.” Even defense attorneys who once faced her in court respected her stand.

Criminal defense lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman said Sassoon and her team were “fierce advocates for the office.”

What is the Corruption Case Against Mayor Eric Adams?

Adams’ legal troubles began in September 2024 when he was charged with corruption. Prosecutors accused him of accepting illegal campaign donations, soliciting foreign contributions, and using his office for personal gain. The case detailed how he allegedly defrauded millions in public matching funds and pressured city agencies for favors.

Despite the severity of the charges, the Justice Department suddenly intervened. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove ordered the case dropped, citing political concerns. He argued that Adams’ legal troubles were interfering with his ability to work on President Trump’s immigration policies and other city priorities. Critics, however, saw this as blatant political interference.
