Lawyer Bios Are Becoming More Personalized & Friendly Than Ever
Lawyers are shaking off the stiff, buttoned-up bios of the past. Today, your average lawyer bio doesn’t read like a LinkedIn resume. It reads like a story. One that makes you want to pick up the phone.
Why the shift? Because clients don’t just want smart. They want real. And smart lawyers know that if you can’t make a connection, you are just another name in a sea of JD degrees.
A personal touch goes a long way. Lawyers who include a slice of their personality, something beyond law school and court wins, tend to leave a stronger impression.

Pavel / Pexels / Legal marketing expert Jay Harrington says that when clients feel like they “know, like, and trust” a lawyer, they are more likely to engage.
Maybe it is a line about their love for street tacos or a quick story about coaching their kid’s soccer team. These things stick.
And in a field where everyone has credentials, being memorable matters. People hire people, not PDFs.
Humor Has a Place in the Legal World
For years, the idea of a funny lawyer bio would have seemed off-limits. Now, it is a secret weapon.
Look at the late Martin Ginsburg. In his bio, he joked that he performed “no useful service at all” on an ABA council. That kind of dry wit boosted his credibility. It made people smile, and more importantly, it made them remember him.
Lawyers who let a little humor peek through show confidence. It says, “I take the law seriously, but I don’t take myself too seriously.” Clients like that. It breaks the ice before the first handshake.
Boring bios blend together. But one unexpected fact? That can spark a conversation.
Donald Hyun Kiolbassa is a great example. He is a lawyer and a martial arts champion, and the motion capture model for Mortal Kombat. That fun fact sets him apart instantly. It tells you something about his discipline, his focus, and yes, his flair.
When Firms Get Creative, Culture Shines Through
Some firms are going all in on creativity. They are using Q&A formats, quirky questions, and even pop culture nods to bring bios to life.
Edelson PC, for example, asks everyone on the team to answer the same playful questions. Things like “Who would play you in a movie?” or “What is your dream superpower?” The result? You get a sense of the firm’s vibe immediately. It is bold, it is fresh, and it shows confidence in who they are.
For lawyers working in teams, this format also builds unity. It shows that while every attorney is different, they are all part of a culture that values people as much as resumes.
How to Write a Bio That Actually Works?
So, how do you write a lawyer bio that lands? First, be real. Don’t invent hobbies or pretend to be someone you’re not. As Grace Del Val of Bad Robot says, “It just takes a lot of bravery to be yourself.” Clients respect that honesty.

But if you are representing Fortune 500 banks, maybe leave that out. The key is being relatable and relevant.
Plus, don’t toss in a random “fun fact” just to tick a box. It has to be interesting. Legal coach Rachael Bosch says the goal is to spark a “tell me more” reaction. If it doesn’t do that, cut it.
